Sometimes the idea of sitting in an office and talking about hard things can feel like one more thing to manage.

You may know you need support, but the traditional therapy setting does not always feel like the best fit. You may think more clearly when you move. You may feel calmer outside. You may simply want therapy to feel more natural and less intimidating.

That is where Walk & Talk Therapy can be a meaningful option.

At Create PAUSE Counselling & Wellness, Walk & Talk Therapy blends evidence-based counselling with movement, fresh air, and the regulating power of being outdoors.

What Is Walk & Talk Therapy?

Walk & Talk Therapy is a counselling session that takes place outdoors while we walk together at a comfortable pace.

There is no pressure to perform therapy a certain way. We can walk, pause, slow down, sit on a bench, or take a moment of silence when needed. Sessions are collaborative, supportive, and built around what feels manageable for you.

Sometimes healing happens easier side by side than face to face.

Why It Works: What the Research Shows

Walk & Talk Therapy is supported by three evidence-informed ingredients: movement, nature, and connection.

1. Movement Can Improve Mood and Reduce Stress

Research has consistently shown that physical activity can support mental health. Walking, in particular, is one of the most accessible forms of movement and has been linked to reduced depressive symptoms, lower stress, and improved emotional wellbeing. A Canadian feasibility study in an outpatient trauma program found that integrating walking into psychotherapy sessions was both practical and well received by clients.

Sometimes the body needs to move before the mind can settle.

2. Nature Supports Mental Health

The environment matters. Exposure to natural settings has been associated with improved mood, lower stress, better attention, and increased wellbeing.

The Canadian Psychological Association notes that time in nature can positively impact psychological, cognitive, and physical health. Their public resource on nature exposure highlights benefits such as stress reduction, improved emotional wellbeing, and mental restoration.

The setting itself can become part of the healing process.

3. Canadian Youth Research Shows Strong Benefits of Outdoor Activity

A 2025 national Canadian study using data from more than 10,000 adolescents found that higher levels of outdoor physical activity were associated with stronger positive mental health, greater life satisfaction, and higher happiness. Youth engaging in 14+ hours per week of outdoor physical activity showed the strongest benefits.

Getting outside matters, especially for young people.

4. Therapy Can Feel Easier in Motion

For some people, sitting face-to-face in an office can feel intense or vulnerable. Walking side by side can reduce pressure and create a more natural flow to conversation.

Emerging research on outdoor talking therapies suggests many clients report feeling more relaxed, less stuck, and more open while walking outdoors.

Therapy does not have to feel stiff or formal to be effective.
