Narrative Approaches is a counselling technique that see’s you as the expert in your own life and sees problems as separate from the person. This approach assumes that people have many skills, competencies, beliefs, values, commitments and abilities that will assist them to reduce the influence of problems in their lives. Narrative therapy is sometimes known as involving ‘re-authoring’ or ‘re-storying’. These storylines are viewed by counsellors as open to more than one possible meaning or interpretation that can change at any point in time. This theory suggests that people interpret and respond to experiences in ways that either open up possibilities or limit choices. The goal is to help you construct different, more empowering, personal life narratives.
