Trauma Focused Therapy is an approach that recognizes and emphasizes understanding how traumatic experience impact a person’s mental, behavioral, emotional, physical and spiritual well-being. The therapy is rooted in understanding the connection between the trauma experience and a person’s emotional and behavioral responses. The purpose is to offer education about common trauma responses, the impacts trauma has on other family members, and skills and strategies to assist in developing healthier ways of coping.
It is important to remember that not all overwhelming or life-threatening experiences are considered traumatic. Children interpret their experiences differently. A negative life experience that is traumatic for one child might not be traumatic for another.
